Teen Witness's Testimony Leads to Life Sentence for Wife's Killer

A 26-year-old man, Shamshad alias Raju, has been sentenced to life imprisonment for the 2021 murder of his wife in Ghaziabad. The court's decision was largely based on the crucial testimony of the victim's adopted teenage daughter, Afreen, who witnessed the entire incident. Afreen recounted how an argument escalated when Shamshad wanted to move to Delhi, and her mother was reluctant.

During the altercation, Shamshad allegedly sat on her mother, held her by the hair, and used a paper cutter to slit her throat. Afreen’s immediate screams and subsequent attempt to seek help from neighbors, despite threats from Shamshad, were vital. Shamshad, who had been on the run for nearly 18 months and had a Rs 25,000 bounty on his head, was arrested in February 2023.

While the defense questioned the validity of Afreen’s adoption and other aspects of the case, the court emphasized the natural and credible nature of her testimony. The judge also considered the autopsy report confirming the cause of death. The court awarded life imprisonment and a fine of Rs 1.06 lakh, with 90% of the fine designated as compensation for Afreen.
