A workplace dispute that had been brewing for approximately six months culminated in a fatal shooting on June 12. Joey McLean, 41, was fatally shot at his worksite, allegedly by his 31-year-old coworker, Brysen Kim.
Kim reportedly told police that he had made multiple reports to the city about McLean's harassment and threats, but received no assistance. He stated that the city failed to provide a safe working environment. Witnesses described an altercation where McLean allegedly initiated a physical confrontation before being shot.
Prior to the incident, McLean had been on a 15-day administrative leave. Investigations revealed that issues between McLean and his team, including disputes over work trucks and alleged after-hours text messages, had involved the Human Resources department multiple times.
Supervisors were reportedly planning to move McLean to a different job site to separate the men, but the homicide occurred before this could be implemented. Police have charged Kim with murder with the use of a deadly weapon.
