26 Mar
Summary
- Commission ruled officers acted out of policy in April 2025 shooting.
- Two officers violated lethal force and weapon drawing policies.
- Jillian Lauren received a mental health diversion program.

In April 2025, the Los Angeles Police Commission ruled that officers violated department policies when they discharged their firearms at Jillian Lauren, the ex-wife of the Weezer bassist. Commissioners specifically found that two officers acted against policy regarding the use of lethal force and the exhibition of their weapons.
This decision stems from an incident following a police chase of hit-and-run suspects in Eagle Rock. Lauren, who had a handgun in her backyard, was wounded in the shoulder by officers. She stated she was defending her home. Despite commands to drop the weapon, she pointed it at officers before being shot and subsequently arrested.
Lauren faced charges including gross negligence in firearm discharge and assault. However, she was granted a two-year mental health diversion program, which could lead to the dismissal of her charges. The judge mandated her participation in therapy, drug and alcohol testing, support group meetings, and a prohibition on possessing firearms.
The commission also indicated that Police Chief Jim McDonnell would decide on any disciplinary actions against the involved officers and a sergeant, whose tactics were deemed subject to administrative disapproval.
