Mayor Condemns 'Disturbing' Dog Shooting by LAPD

Mayor Karen Bass has officially condemned the LAPD's fatal shooting of a dog during a Los Angeles celebration. The mayor described the incident as "disturbing and tragic" following her review of bodycam footage, which has been released.

Mayor Bass confirmed she and LAPD Chief Jim McDonnell agreed on the swift release of the footage. She stated that while an investigation is ongoing, she is concerned about the justification for the shots fired that killed the dog, Jameson. This incident has prompted a directive for the Police Commission President and Chief to reassess the Use of Force policy concerning dog encounters, examining best practices nationwide.

The fatal shooting of Jameson, a golden retriever-poodle mix, gained widespread attention after video surfaced earlier this week. The footage documented Jameson barking and officers demanding restraint before the dog escaped an apartment. An officer, who had expressed fear of being bitten, discharged their firearm multiple times at the pet.

Jameson's owner, Marie Marseille, was celebrating the New York Knicks' NBA championship victory, which led to her yelling. Her family, through their attorney, called the shooting "completely unnecessary and profoundly dangerous." They noted the officer's weapon was drawn early in the encounter, even before Jameson exited the apartment, and that attempts to de-escalate or assess the situation seemed minimal.

The family highlighted that the shooting occurred inside Marseille's home, and questioned whether the officer's decision to use lethal force was pre-determined. They asserted that Jameson appeared to be a domestic pet, not presenting an immediate threat justifying such rapid escalation. The incident concluded with the dog dead, its owner traumatized, and significant questions raised about the officer's judgment and conduct.
