A California man, Alexander Soofer, 42, has been arrested and charged with allegedly stealing $10 million in public funds meant for the homeless. Soofer served as the executive director of Abundant Blessings, a Los Angeles-based charity that received $23 million in public contracts between 2018 and 2025.
Investigations revealed that Soofer falsified documents and created fake invoices to misappropriate millions for personal use. The stolen funds were reportedly used for a $7 million home in Los Angeles, vacation property in Greece, and private jet travel. Site visits by investigators found that the charity provided inadequate meals, such as ramen noodles and canned beans, instead of the promised three healthy meals a day.
Soofer faces 18 felony counts, with a potential sentence of over 17 years if convicted. Los Angeles County District Attorney Nathan J. Hochman stated that the defendant's company name, "Abundant Blessings," was ironic, as the only beneficiaries were himself. Soofer made his initial court appearance on January 23, 2026, with his bond set at $1.5 million. His next court date is scheduled for February 26, 2026.
