- Two suspects arrested, claim they were cleaning the pond.
- Toxic insecticide residue found in the contaminated water body.
An unusual event has unfolded within the secure grounds of the 2nd and 8th battalions of the Kolkata Armed Police in Cossipore. Authorities reported the discovery of dead fish in a pond located on their premises, alleging that a significant quantity of fish was stolen overnight. Two people, Himadri Saha and Sohrab Ali, were apprehended in connection with the incident. However, they maintain their innocence, stating they were engaged in cleaning the pond. Police are continuing their investigation, with further arrests anticipated.
The breach of security occurred on or before September 9th. According to an FIR filed by inspector Partha Sarathi Mandal, unidentified culprits gained illegal entry into the heavily guarded government compound. They reportedly used specialized equipment to harvest and steal a large stock of diverse fish species. The complaint emphasizes that no external party had permission to access or operate within the water body.
Before departing, the perpetrators are accused of dumping a toxic substance into the pond, leading to the immediate death of the remaining fish and other aquatic life. Investigators found empty containers of cypermethrin-based insecticides near the pond's edge. This contamination has devastated the local ecosystem, with decomposing marine life causing a strong stench and raising environmental and public health concerns. The contaminated water poses an ongoing risk to wildlife and personnel on site.
Cossipore Police have registered a case under various sections of the law, including criminal trespass, theft, poisoning, and damage to public property. The internal CCTV network captured the illegal activities, and investigators are meticulously analyzing the footage to identify all individuals involved and the network behind the theft and poisoning.
