Kolkata is bolstering its security measures for the upcoming New Year's Eve celebrations, with over 4,500 police officers slated for deployment starting December 30th. This extensive operation will focus on the city's popular gathering spots and party zones, aiming to ensure a safe and festive atmosphere for residents and visitors alike.
The primary objective is to significantly curb incidents of drink-driving and speeding, which pose a high risk during New Year's Eve and the subsequent New Year's Day. Key areas such as Park Street, Kasba, and attractions like Victoria Memorial Hall will see heightened police presence and strategically placed check posts to monitor traffic and public order.
In addition to uniformed personnel, special teams, including plainclothes officers and rapid response units, will be actively patrolling sensitive areas. Pedestrian safety will also be enhanced with dedicated channels and adjusted signal timings. Barricades will be erected on roads near major celebration points to manage crowds and traffic flow effectively.
