New Year's Eve celebrations in Kolkata were marred by violent clashes in the Tangra and Tiljala areas, resulting in at least 15 injuries. One person suffered a critical eye injury, raising concerns about potential vision loss. The incidents, which occurred around 12:15 am on Thursday, involved the use of various weapons and damage to several vehicles.
In Tangra, police registered a suo-motu case after rioters allegedly used lathis, hockey sticks, bricks, and glass bottles. The group also reportedly obstructed police personnel who attempted to intervene and disperse the unlawful assembly. Investigations into this incident are currently ongoing, with several individuals identified by the police.
A separate clash erupted minutes later in Tiljala, where two groups engaged in scuffles and fights. Despite police orders to cease, the violence escalated until reinforcements arrived. While some individuals fled, police detained several people and arrested two men, posting a picket to restore peace.
