Justice Sec Blocks Murderer's Open Prison Move

Justice Secretary David Lammy has intervened to block the transfer of Jake Fahri, convicted of murdering Jimmy Mizen, to an open prison. Fahri, who was serving a life sentence for killing the 16-year-old schoolboy in 2008, had his request for a move to lower-security conditions denied. This decision came after it emerged that Fahri, under the rap alias TEN, produced drill music videos containing lyrics that appeared to gloat about the murder.

The Parole Board had initially recommended Fahri be moved to an open prison, believing he could reflect on his attitude and behavior in that environment. However, upon discovering the content of his music, which included lines such as 'Watched him melt like Ben and Jerry's,' the Justice Secretary overruled this recommendation. Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer also expressed concern about the additional stress the music would cause to the Mizen family.

Jimmy Mizen's mother, Margaret, stated she was 'shocked' by the Parole Board's initial recommendation but glad Lammy rejected it, indicating it proves Fahri's attitude has not changed. The Ministry of Justice confirmed that public protection is paramount, and blocking Fahri's transfer ensures his continued secure containment. Fahri was originally released on license in June 2023 but recalled in January 2026 after the music's content surfaced.
