Kane Kotwica, 39, has been convicted of murdering Matthew Cainey and causing grievous bodily harm to two other men during a violent incident fueled by drugs and alcohol. The attack occurred on May 28, when Kotwica stabbed Mr. Cainey fatally in the chest after an initial argument in a shared flat. He then inflicted serious stab wounds on two other men who attempted to intervene.
Following the assaults, Kotwica fled the scene and attempted to discard the murder weapon down a drain. However, armed officers from Gloucestershire Police swiftly apprehended him in a broad daylight arrest, the moment of which was captured on bodycam. The harrowing altercation was also recorded by a doorbell camera.
Kotwica denied murder, claiming self-defense, but a jury unanimously found him guilty of murder and two counts of grievous bodily harm with intent. He has been remanded in custody and awaits sentencing, while the family of Matthew Cainey expressed their heartbreak but also relief at the verdict.
