19 Aug
Summary
- 125 grams of MDMA were seized from a car's stereo system.
- Four adults and a child were apprehended during the drug bust.
- Women and families are increasingly used as a cover for drug trafficking.

In Thiruvananthapuram, the Kerala Excise department intercepted a car late Tuesday night, uncovering 125 grams of MDMA concealed within its stereo system. The vehicle was found carrying four adults and an eight-year-old child, indicating a concerning strategy by drug traffickers to use families as a cover.
The seizure, conducted under 'Operation Thunder', targeted a specific intelligence tip about MDMA being transported from Bengaluru. Officials located the drugs after an intensive search, finding them hidden deep within the car's stereo. This marks one of the significant synthetic drug seizures in the region recently.
Four individuals were arrested: Kiran, 35, Akshay, 27, Beena, 55, and Sandhya, 18. Kiran is a known suspected trafficker in the district. Investigations revealed that Beena, Kiran's mother, and Sandhya, his girlfriend, were allegedly aware and involved in the operation. The child, Kiran's daughter, was placed with relatives.
Excise officials noted the alarming trend of using seemingly unsuspecting individuals, including women and children, to reduce suspicion during transit. This interception was only possible due to precise intelligence. Authorities are now examining digital data to trace the MDMA's origin and identify the wider network.
Increased surveillance is in place ahead of the Onam festival. The case is considered crucial for understanding how drug networks are adapting their methods to smuggle synthetic narcotics into Kerala, prompting closer scrutiny of routes from neighboring states.
