Police in Kanpur have apprehended three suspects believed to be part of a counterfeit currency operation. The arrests led to the seizure of fake notes totaling Rs 2.04 lakh, along with the equipment used for printing them.
Acting on a tip, authorities arrested Somil Gupta, Roshan Ali, and Sher Singh. Investigations revealed that Sher Singh, with limited formal education, allegedly masterminded the operation, using a computer, high-quality printer, and imported paper to produce counterfeit currency.
The group had reportedly been circulating fake notes for the past three to four months. Their modus operandi involved offering fake currency at a fraction of its face value, providing Rs 10,000 in counterfeit notes for every Rs 3,000 in genuine money.
Evidence suggests the accused targeted busy areas like Kanpur Central railway station and markets in nearby districts to distribute smaller denominations of fake currency. Police noted that the arrested individuals have prior criminal records, including theft and pickpocketing. Efforts are underway to identify and arrest other associates involved in the racket.
