1 Apr
Summary
- Five doctors orchestrated an illegal kidney transplant syndicate.
- The group arranged donors, recipients, and surgical teams.
- Hospitals earned significant sums for facilitating illegal procedures.

A sophisticated illegal kidney transplant racket, estimated to have performed 40 to 50 procedures over five years, was masterminded by an organized syndicate of five doctors in Kanpur. This group operated with "corporate precision," meticulously controlling all aspects from donor and recipient arrangements to flying in surgical teams and erasing medical records. They have been identified by investigators by their first names: Rohit, Afzal, Vaibhav, Amit, and Anurag.
Dr. Rohit was responsible for assembling surgical teams, arranging their air travel to Lucknow and subsequent road transport to Kanpur. Dr. Afzal managed a Telegram group for coordinating donors and recipients, offering a veneer of legitimacy. Doctors Vaibhav, Anurag, and Amit directly handled donor persuasion, often targeting economically vulnerable individuals with promises of significant financial rewards that were rarely fully met. One donor, Ayush Chaudhary, was promised ₹9 lakh but received only ₹3.5 lakh for his kidney.
The syndicate's ground coordinator in Kanpur, ambulance driver Shivam Aggarwal, has been arrested. Hospitals involved, such as Ahuja Hospital and Medlife Hospital, received substantial payments for providing operating theatres, with owners allegedly aware of the illegal nature of the procedures. Patients were admitted under the guise of other surgeries, and no medical records were maintained. Recent transplants included one for a South African national and another for Parul Tomar, a mother of two.
Police are actively pursuing the five doctors and have dispatched teams to Dehradun, Meerut, Noida, and Lucknow. This syndicate is considered one of the most structured and well-oiled illegal transplant networks exposed recently. The investigation aims to uncover the full extent of this racket and secure the arrests of the key individuals involved.
