In Kanpur, a fast-track court has delivered a seven-year rigorous imprisonment sentence to a man and his parents for their involvement in a dowry death case. The court found Sanjay Nishad, along with his parents Ram Pal and Gomti, guilty of the crime.
The conviction stems from events following the marriage of Sanjay Nishad to Priya on March 12, 2019. Her maternal uncle reported that the in-laws were dissatisfied with the dowry provided and had been demanding a car and ₹3 lakh in cash.
Tragically, on June 26, 2020, Priya reportedly contacted her uncle, detailing that her in-laws were assaulting her due to the unmet dowry demands. The following day, her in-laws informed the family of her demise. Upon arrival at their home, Priya's body was discovered hanging from the roof.
During the trial, the prosecution presented evidence through nine witnesses. The court, considering this evidence, handed down the seven-year sentence. Additionally, each convict faces two months of further imprisonment if they fail to pay a fine of ₹20,000. Time already spent in jail during the trial will be applied to their sentence.
