- Sentenced to 10 years rigorous imprisonment and fined.
- Cruelty and dowry demands led to the wife's death.
A fast-track court in Kanpur has convicted Amarjeet Singh Khanuja for the dowry death of his wife, Priya Sahu (38), sentencing him to 10 years of rigorous imprisonment and imposing a Rs 35,000 fine. The court observed that Khanuja subjected his wife to cruelty, which led to her death in April 2024.
The case was initiated by the deceased's brother, Saurabh Sahu, who alleged that his sister was married to Khanuja in November 2018. He claimed that Khanuja and his brother, Harmindar Singh, harassed Priya over dowry demands, including physical assaults. Saurabh Sahu suspected foul play when informed of his wife's death by fire, finding her body outside the bathroom.
Harmindar Singh, a co-accused, died during the trial, leading to the abatement of the case against him. The prosecution presented 15 witnesses to support its case. The conviction of Amarjeet Singh Khanuja brings a close to this chapter of dowry-related violence.
