Armed Man Dead After Firing at Deputies in Standoff

An hours-long standoff in Ross Township, Kalamazoo County, ended with police fatally shooting an assault suspect. Deputies were initially dispatched to the residence on July 10, around 4:20 p.m., following a report that an individual had brandished a firearm. The suspect's father indicated his son might be experiencing a mental health crisis.

Deputies attempted to engage the suspect, who briefly emerged from the home yelling incoherently before retreating inside. Without provocation, the suspect then fired multiple rounds from a rifle at the deputies, who returned fire while seeking cover. The situation escalated into a prolonged standoff lasting approximately 10 hours.

During the standoff, negotiators communicated with the man while other occupants were safely removed from the home. Less-lethal tactics were employed to encourage surrender, but the suspect refused to leave. The incident concluded when the suspect fired from an upstairs bedroom window toward officers and law enforcement equipment, prompting officers to return fire and strike the man, who subsequently died.

The Michigan State Police has taken charge of the investigation into the officer-involved shooting. The Kalamazoo County Sheriff's Office expressed gratitude that no deputies or community members were harmed during the prolonged and hazardous incident. The involved sheriff's deputies have been placed on paid administrative leave.
