Comedian Lycett's neighbour convicted after death threat

Sam Egerton, a former England Sevens rugby player and Oxford law graduate, was convicted of stalking comedian Joe Lycett. The harassment campaign lasted four months and included abusive social media posts on X, one of which contained a death threat. Egerton also loitered outside Lycett's home and was captured on ring doorbell footage shouting in the early hours.

Birmingham Magistrates' Court heard Egerton's messages made reference to Lycett's baby and revealed their shared street name. Lycett stated he became concerned for his safety and that of his family. Egerton, who played for Newcastle Falcons, confessed to posting 'terribly nasty' things but claimed he did not mean them.

Lycett told the court he had no ill will towards Egerton and hoped he would be supported. Egerton, who previously stated he had been 'sectioned' and felt suicidal, was granted bail with conditions not to contact Lycett or visit his street. Sentencing is scheduled for April 24.
