An 18-year-old woman, Nehanshi Kumari, was discovered hanging from the ceiling of a room in her in-laws' residence in Narkhoriya village, Garhwa district, Jharkhand. The incident occurred on Monday evening. Her husband, Ravi Prasad, 25, was apprehended by authorities on Tuesday after the victim's mother filed a formal complaint.
According to the complaint, Nehanshi Kumari had been subjected to persistent dowry harassment by her husband and his family since her marriage five months prior. The family allegedly demanded a significant dowry, including Rs 5 lakh in cash, a motorcycle, and gold jewelry. When her parents could not meet these demands, the accused reportedly assaulted her, leading to her death.
Police have registered a case under the BNS and the Dowry Prohibition Act. While the husband is in custody, a manhunt is underway for five other family members who are currently absconding. The body was released to the parents after a post-mortem examination conducted on Tuesday. Investigations are continuing.
