Custodial Torture: SHRC Orders ₹5 Lakh Payout
12 Dec
Summary
- SHRC ordered ₹5 lakh compensation for jewelers tortured by police.
- Othakadai police officers held responsible for unlawful custody.
- Police failed to provide evidence to disprove torture allegations.

The State Human Rights Commission (SHRC) has ordered a compensation of ₹5 lakh to two Madurai jewelers who were allegedly subjected to custodial torture by the Othakadai police. The incident occurred in August 2021 when the jewelers were detained in connection with a theft case.
Commission member V. Kannadasan directed the state to recover specific amounts from the involved police officers. The complainants stated they were held in unlawful custody for several days, facing verbal abuse and coercion, with attempts to implicate them falsely in a jewelry theft case. Police denied the allegations but failed to present contradictory evidence.
The SHRC ruled that the police violated the rights of the individuals. Consequently, ₹3 lakh was awarded to one jeweler and ₹2 lakh to the other, with the directive for recovery from the responsible officers. The commission also recommended departmental action against the implicated police personnel.
