A 32-year-old habitual conman, Rahul Prakash Karpe, has been arrested by Dongri Police for allegedly defrauding jewelry shop owners in Mumbai, Thane, and Navi Mumbai. His arrest on July 5, 2026, has facilitated the detection of seven similar cases across various police jurisdictions.
Karpe's method involved posing as a customer, selecting gold ornaments, paying partially in cash, and then presenting a fake UPI transaction confirmation via a fraudulent app. While shopkeepers verified the payment, he would abscond with the gold. This elaborate scheme was unraveled through technical analysis and intelligence gathering by the Dongri Police Crime Detection Squad.
During his arrest, police recovered cash and a gold chain linked to an offense in Dombivli. Interrogation revealed Karpe's involvement in similar crimes in Dongri, Kalachowki, APMC, Navi Mumbai, Narpoli, Bhiwandi, Manpada, Dombivli, Kopri, Thane, and Kapurbawdi, Thane. Authorities are investigating further to determine if he committed additional offenses using the same tactic.
