Mental Health Trial Begins in Halloween Shooting Case

Jury selection has begun in the trial of Jaylen Edgar, who is accused of a fatal shooting during Halloween celebrations in downtown Orlando in 2024. Edgar faces charges for allegedly killing two individuals and injuring seven others when he fired into a large crowd.

The court must first seat a jury capable of considering Edgar's defense. He has indicated to the judge that he takes responsibility but was experiencing extreme mental disturbance. This led to a second mental health evaluation, delaying the trial originally scheduled for January.

Despite his attorney's warnings about the difficulty of an insanity defense, Edgar rejected a plea deal and intends to pursue this strategy. Florida law permits this defense even if the attorney objects. The trial is anticipated to last up to two weeks once a jury is selected.
