Sydney Roosters icon Jake Friend has been placed on 'gardening leave' by the club, with his coaching position in the academy and pathways program suspended until his ongoing court case is settled. The legal battle involves an apprehended violence order (AVO) taken out by police in 2025 on behalf of Friend's partner. The 36-year-old former NRL star also faces charges of resisting a police officer in the execution of duty.
Friend, a revered figure at the Roosters, won three premierships as a player in 2013, 2018, and 2019. Since retiring in 2021 due to concussions, he transitioned into coaching, taking a significant role in the club's development programs. His solicitor has indicated that Friend will contest the charges, with a court appearance scheduled for February 2.
Beyond his playing career, Friend also represented Queensland in State of Origin and played once for Australia. During the Covid-19 pandemic, he notably worked in a cafe he opened in Randwick to maintain income while the NRL season was paused. The club awarded him Life Membership in 2023.
