Jakarta Teen's Diary Reveals Lonely Path to Bomb Plot
19 Nov
Summary
- Student felt isolated, seeking online community recognition.
- Diary entries detailed trauma and desire to harm others.
- Bombs were built using YouTube tutorials and online materials.

A 17-year-old student in Jakarta, driven by feelings of isolation and a desire for online recognition, carried out a bomb attack at his school mosque, injuring 96 individuals. Investigators discovered a diary detailing his past trauma and intent to harm others, alongside sketches of the attack site. The student reportedly followed YouTube tutorials to construct seven explosive devices, sourcing materials from online marketplaces.
He was inspired by a Telegram group that glorified white supremacist attacks, including massacres in New Zealand and the U.S. While Telegram stated its moderators actively combat violent content, the student's online activities highlight concerns about radicalization. He used a staged reason, claiming the purchased materials were for cosplay, to deceive his father.
The investigation also revealed a broader issue, with separate arrests of suspects recruiting children into terrorism networks. Authorities are examining security lapses in online material procurement and determining the appropriate legal proceedings for the juvenile suspect, who is currently hospitalized.
