Jail Superintendent Arrested for Forging Records
20 Sep
Summary
- Senior jail superintendent arrested for tampering with prison records.
- Allegations include forging a former jailor's signature after a jailbreak.
- The arrest followed the escape of two murder accused inmates last year.
Choudwar circle jail's senior superintendent, Sujit Kumar Raula, was arrested by Cuttack police on Sunday, September 20, 2026. He faces charges of tampering with prison records and forging the signature of a former jailor. These accusations are linked to the escape of two murder-accused inmates from the prison premises late on October 2, 2025.
The arrest followed the Orissa high court's decision on August 29, 2026, to withdraw Raula's interim protection and reject his anticipatory bail plea. The former jailor, Santoshini Dash, filed a complaint alleging Raula manipulated gate-entry registers and forged her signature on the jail minutes book on October 2, 2025.
Dash claims these actions were intended to conceal Raula's unauthorized absence from duty and to shift blame for the security lapse. Following the jailbreak, two warders were suspended, and Dash was transferred. Raula has denied all allegations and filed a counter-complaint on January 18, 2026, accusing Dash of dereliction of duty.
In his complaint, Raula alleged that Dash, responsible for overall jail security, permitted inmates to leave their cells on two occasions without his authorization, indirectly facilitating the escape. The investigation into these counter-allegations is ongoing.
