Ireland Foiled Massive Cocaine Smuggling Plot
24 Mar
Summary
- Cartels targeted Ireland due to perceived lack of defense capabilities.
- Over 2.2 tonnes of cocaine, worth €157 million, were seized.
- The failed MV Matthew operation disrupted cartel routes and cost them millions.

Drug cartels targeted Ireland as a potential route for cocaine into Europe, influenced by reports suggesting the country lacked robust defense capabilities. Detective Chief Superintendent Séamus Boland stated that this perception attracted international gangs, including Iranian and Kinahan groups, to divert significant drug shipments towards Ireland.
In September 2023, a large-scale operation off the Irish coast successfully intercepted the cargo ship MV Matthew, preventing the smuggling of 2.2 tonnes of cocaine, valued at over €157 million. This seizure marked the largest cocaine haul in Irish history.
The failure of the MV Matthew operation, which also involved the loss of an expensive vessel, has significantly disrupted cartel operations. Boland noted that such successes dismantle expertise and routes, costing the cartels millions and leading to a reduction in similar illicit activities.
This event occurred as cartels were adapting their logistics routes due to successful seizures in Rotherham, Antwerp, and along the Spanish coasts. Ireland's successful interception demonstrated a national stand against these challenges.
