A large-scale animal rescue operation unfolded in Marshall County, Iowa, after authorities were alerted to concerning conditions on a six-acre property. The Animal Rescue League of Iowa (ARL) and law enforcement discovered 379 animals, ranging from chickens and goats to ponies and pigs, living in what was described as dreadful neglect.
The rescued animals were severely underweight, having resorted to eating tree bark and leaves due to lack of food and water. One group of pigs was found in a small, dark enclosure covered in feces. A pony, found struggling to stand, was humanely euthanized due to its poor condition.
On September 28, Pedro Garcia-Alvarez, 46, and Millie Moreno-Garcia, 55, were arrested and charged with livestock neglect. The animals have been transported to the ARL's rehabilitation center, where they are receiving necessary care. The ARL is appealing for donations, supplies, and volunteers to support the ongoing recovery efforts.
