Investigator Denies 'Switching Sides' in Royal Privacy Case
23 Mar
Summary
- Investigator claims a key witness statement against publisher was fake.
- He testified in court and was declared a hostile witness.
- The case involves Prince Harry and other high-profile claimants.

A private investigator, formerly a key witness in a privacy case against a newspaper publisher, has denied switching sides out of revenge. Gavin Burrows testified in the High Court that a significant 2021 witness statement attributed to him was fabricated. He asserted that he first learned of this supposed statement over a year later through a newspaper report.
Burrows, who was declared a hostile witness, further explained that the statement was retracted, and he denied suggestions of changing his stance due to an argument. He stated he had not worked for the publisher and never engaged in unlawful information gathering for them.
The lawsuit, brought by Prince Harry and other high-profile claimants including Sir Elton John and Sadie Frost, accuses the publisher of grave privacy breaches over two decades. The publisher denies all allegations. The trial is expected to conclude later this month.
