Teen Suicide Linked to Instagram Sextortion Scam
20 Dec, 2025
Summary
- A teen died by suicide after falling victim to Instagram sextortion.
- Mother sues Meta, alleging platform prioritized engagement over safety.
- Lawsuit cites similar death in Scotland; Meta claims safety measures exist.

A devastating lawsuit has been filed against Meta, connecting a Pennsylvania teen's suicide in 2024 to a prevalent Instagram sextortion scheme. Thirteen-year-old Levi Maciejewski tragically took his own life after becoming ensnared by scammers posing as peers, who solicited intimate photos and demanded money.
His mother, Tricia Maciejewski, alleges that Meta's design decisions and repeated failures to implement available safety features led to her son's preventable death. The suit, which also includes the family of Murray Dowey from Scotland who died by suicide in 2023 after a similar scam, claims Meta prioritized user engagement over the safety of young users.
Meta has condemned sextortion as a horrific crime and outlined its protective measures, such as making accounts private for users under 16. However, the lawsuit asserts that the company was aware of the risks as early as 2019, with internal testing revealing that Instagram was connecting children with predators.
