A coroner's inquest is currently underway, investigating the death of Jimmie Johannesson, a 61-year-old Haida Elder, who was fatally shot by Surrey RCMP on April 8, 2022. The shooting occurred approximately 23 seconds after police entered his home during a wellness check initiated by his probation officer due to concerns of self-harm.
Johannesson, who had been diagnosed with fetal alcohol syndrome and struggled with various health and emotional challenges, including recent strokes, was reportedly armed with a knife and threatened officers. The Independent Investigations Office previously concluded the use of lethal force was justified but recommended improved police training for confronting individuals in their homes.
The inquest, presided over by Coroner Kristen Everett, will hear from family members and officers involved. The B.C. Civil Liberties Association is advocating for recommendations, such as the inclusion of mental health units in wellness checks, to prevent future deaths when individuals seek help.
Johannesson's sister, Ruby Marks, testified about his difficult past, including being part of the Sixties Scoop and subsequent struggles with belonging and isolation. The inquest, scheduled to conclude on August 5, aims to determine the circumstances of his death and offer recommendations.
