Influencer Accused of Stealing $4M in SNAP Benefits

Mercedes Reshard New, an Atlanta influencer known online as Shawty Dred, has been indicted for allegedly stealing approximately $4.6 million in Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) benefits. The indictment, filed in the Northern District of Georgia, details an alleged scheme spanning six years that involved the creation of 350 fake SNAP accounts using stolen identities. New is accused of defrauding the Georgia Department of Human Services of millions, ultimately pocketing an estimated $4 million.

Authorities reported that New allegedly obtained SNAP EBT cards for the fraudulent accounts and even became a licensed SNAP retailer.
