Indian Woman Narrowly Escapes Chain Snatching in Downtown Chicago

On October 13, 2025, Chabi Gupta, an Indian woman, shared a viral video on Instagram recounting her recent experience of a near-miss chain snatching incident in downtown Chicago. According to Gupta, she was walking on a crowded street when a thief attempted to snatch her chain. Fortunately, she was able to save her locket, though the hook of her chain was taken. Gupta showed the bruises she sustained during the incident and urged everyone to stay safe and vigilant.

In the video, Gupta also called her mother, who expressed shock and disbelief that such a crime could occur in a foreign city like Chicago, as these incidents are rare in cities like Ranchi, Patna, or Bangalore. Gupta clarified that she was not trying to spread fear but to share the reality that Chicago has recently seen a rise in street robberies and chain snatching, particularly around the Loop and Magnificent Mile areas.

Gupta advised people to keep their valuables safe, stay aware of their surroundings, and, if possible, walk in groups. She added that while she loves the city, personal safety should never be overlooked, urging everyone to be cautious and vigilant.
