A 34-year-old Indian-origin man, Gagandeep Singh, has received a 34-year sentence in London after being convicted of severe offenses, including kidnap, torture, and rape. The sentencing at Isleworth Crown Court followed his February conviction on charges of rape, false imprisonment, grievous bodily harm with intent, and kidnap.
The victim, a 24-year-old woman, was taken to a house in Hanwell, west London, where she endured extensive torture. She reported being subjected to rape on two occasions, along with being punched, beaten, stripped, whipped, and burnt. The court heard that masked men put her into a car and drove her to London after she refused to transport a suspicious suitcase from Thailand.
Detective Constable Seetara Abdul praised the victim's bravery and strength, noting the cruel control she faced and her initial fear of reporting the crimes. The victim herself shared that threats were made to silence her, but her mother's unwavering support and the collection of her clothes and medical notes as evidence were pivotal. The mother's decision to make a third-party report to the Metropolitan Police, despite her daughter's initial reluctance, led to forensic examination and Singh's arrest.
Singh must serve at least 18 years before being eligible for parole. The Metropolitan Police highlighted their strengthened training and support services for violence against women and girls in response to such incidents. The victim's mother expressed gratitude for the professionalism and sensitivity of the police, providing the family with a sense of closure.
