Imran Khan Challenges OCI Cancellation Notice
28 Oct
Summary
- Actor Imran Khan disputes grounds for OCI status cancellation.
- FRRO cites alleged participation in an anti-CEC protest.
- Khan demands disclosure of evidence for fairness.
US national and actor Imran Khan has formally responded to the Foreigners Regional Registration Office (FRRO), challenging the grounds for his Overseas Citizen of India (OCI) status cancellation. Khan stated that the reasons cited in the show-cause notice, issued on October 17, are vague and contradictory.
The FRRO initiated the process after Khan allegedly participated in an anti-Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) protest on October 10. Khan's legal team contends that the FRRO's actions violate principles of natural justice, as he has not been provided with the full Mumbai police report or supporting evidence.
Khan has requested full disclosure of all materials relied upon by the FRRO to ensure a fair and transparent review. He highlighted that an incomplete statement attributed to him was cited in the notice. The Bombay High Court is scheduled to hear a challenge to a prior 'Leave India notice' on November 2.
Khan's response, submitted on October 22, emphasizes the need for swift disclosure of evidence, as the show-cause notice provided a limited 15-day window for a response. He pointed out that the police had not officially recorded his statement in connection with the FIR filed for unlawful assembly.
