Illinois Honors Emmett Till with Statewide Day

Illinois has officially declared July 25 as Emmett Till Day statewide. This significant legislative action was taken on Thursday by Governor JB Pritzker. The chosen date, July 25, marks the birthday of Emmett Till, who would have been 85 this year. His brutal lynching in 1955, following a visit to family in Mississippi, and his mother's courageous decision for an open-casket funeral, became a pivotal catalyst for the modern Civil Rights Movement.

The bill signing ceremony occurred at Roberts Temple Church of God in Christ, the same location where Till's funeral was held. Governor Pritzker expressed his hope that this annual designation will inspire communities to organize educational events and foster public reflection. He invoked the powerful plea of Mamie Till-Mobley, Emmett's mother, stating that Illinois is honoring her call to remember her son's story and ensure their legacies are never forgotten.
