In a recent operation, forest officials in Pune apprehended a 34-year-old tattoo artist, Malhar Lala Lokhande, for his involvement in the illegal wildlife trade. The arrest occurred near the Pune Railway Station following information about individuals engaged in selling dried monitor lizard genitals. Lokhande was found with a severed genital organ, and his accomplice, who escaped, was reportedly carrying approximately 70 such dried parts.
Investigations indicate that the monitor lizard parts, locally known as 'ghorpad,' were sourced from the forests of Junnar in Pune district. These parts are illicitly traded in the black market as 'Hatha Jodi,' driven by superstitious beliefs that they bring prosperity and good luck. Monitor lizards are classified under Schedule I of the Wildlife (Protection) Act, offering them the highest level of protection.
Lokhande was detained for about a month before being granted bail. The search for his absconding accomplice is ongoing. Forest authorities are also attempting to identify the individuals who hunted the monitor lizards in Junnar and supplied the body parts. This case highlights a disturbing trend of wildlife poaching for superstitious purposes, a concern echoed by wildlife conservationists.
