Piracy Bust: £750K Servers Seized, 4 Arrested

Authorities have made a significant advancement in combating illegal streaming, arresting four individuals and confiscating servers valued at approximately £750,000. The operation, conducted by the City of London Police's Intellectual Property Crime Unit, targeted a widespread network providing illicit access to sports, films, and numerous channels.

The raid in Manchester last week uncovered 10 servers, each worth around £75,000, representing a substantial win for Sky and law enforcement. This operation is believed to have served millions of viewers across the UK. Sky's intelligence was crucial in tipping off the police, leading to the dismantling of the network.

One suspect is alleged to have amassed £3 million from this extensive operation. Industry reports indicate that approximately five million people nationally are estimated to use 'dodgy' Fire Sticks for illegal streaming. Those found guilty of using illicit devices face potential criminal charges, significant fines, or imprisonment up to five years, with lesser penalties for users versus distributors.

Detective Constable Jordan Day emphasized the importance of protecting broadcasting integrity and thanked partners like Sky. Matt Hibbert of Sky highlighted that illegal streaming is not a victimless crime, noting that nearly 65% of illegal streamers have experienced security scares like malware. The crackdown aims to protect consumers, their devices, and personal data.
