A 28-year-old junior technician at the Indian Institute of Technology-Kanpur (IIT-K) died by suicide on Saturday. She was found hanging in her campus accommodation after an argument with her fiance over the phone. The technician, identified as Anju Kumari, had reportedly told her fiance she would end her life before disconnecting the call.
Her fiance, alarmed, contacted a friend on campus who alerted his brother. Upon finding the door locked, the hostel warden and police were called. Anju was discovered hanging from a ceiling fan after the door was forced open. She was pronounced dead at the campus hospital.
Investigators recovered a diary with about 350 pages, containing personal entries. One entry suggested she was hurt by being scolded during a phone call. Police are also examining her history, including her brother's death by suicide last year and her past struggles with depression. However, family members stated she seemed emotionally stable recently.
Authorities are investigating all angles, including call records and the diary's contents, to understand the events leading to her death. The body has been sent for a post-mortem examination.
