IIT Bombay Suicide: Parents Refuse Body Over Arrests

The investigation into the alleged abetment of suicide of IIT-Bombay student Sahil Wakode, 20, was transferred to the Mumbai Police's crime branch late on Saturday. Wakode was discovered deceased in his hostel room on Friday. His parents filed a complaint with the Powai Police on Saturday, leading to an FIR for abetment of suicide under the Bhartiya Nyaya Sanhita.
The complaint also invoked provisions of the Prevention of Atrocities Act, as Wakode's parents alleged he faced harassment with casteist slurs. The FIR specifically names a senior IIT Bombay professor along with other senior officials. This marks the third suicide incident on the campus this year.
Wakode's parents, Ravindra and Sonali, initially refused to claim their only child's body from the post-mortem center for over seven hours on Saturday, demanding the arrest of the accused. The situation was resolved around 9 PM after the case transfer, and the body was subsequently claimed. An IIT-Bombay spokesperson stated full cooperation with the ongoing police investigation.
