Hyderabad Police Vow Zero Tolerance for Drunk Driving Amid Soaring Incidents

As of October 26th, 2025, the Hyderabad police commissioner, VC Sajjanar, has taken a firm stance against the city's growing drunk driving crisis. Describing drunk drivers as "terrorists on the roads of Hyderabad," Sajjanar has vowed to adopt a stringent zero-tolerance policy going forward.

In a scathing attack on offenders, the commissioner called the recent Kurnool bus tragedy a "preventable massacre" caused by the "reckless and irresponsible behavior of an intoxicated biker." He stated that this was not a mere "road mishap" but a "criminal act of negligence" that claimed multiple lives.

According to official records, Hyderabad has witnessed over 100,000 drunk driving cases since 2023, with 40,000 reported so far in 2025. Alarmingly, the majority of the 2,000 road accidents this year were linked to drunk driving. The commissioner emphasized that no exceptions will be made, and all violators will face the "full force of the law," as drunk driving is a "crime that destroys lives, families, and futures."

The Hyderabad traffic police have suggested measures like license forfeiture, jail time for repeat offenders, and registering drunk driving as a criminal offense to enforce stricter rules and impose harsher penalties on violators. With the commissioner's zero-tolerance stance, the city is poised to tackle this growing menace and prevent further tragedies on its roads.
