Hundreds of Exotic Pets Rescued from Horrific Conditions

In a series of raids conducted in 2022 and 2023, authorities in the UK rescued hundreds of exotic pets from horrific living conditions. The operation, led by the RSPCA, uncovered widespread animal neglect and cruelty at multiple properties.

At one location in Holyhead Road near Shifnal, inspectors recovered over 1,000 leopard geckos, along with more than 300 tortoises, 18 pythons, and various other reptiles. Many of the animals were found dead or close to death, with the RSPCA describing the situation as "incredibly sad." The charity's inspector, Kate Parker, noted that the premises were freezing cold, which was particularly unsuitable for the reptiles.

Similar conditions were discovered at other properties, including one in Wrockwardine where a monitor lizard and crested gecko were found in dangerously low temperatures. Elsewhere, 73 tortoises were packed into boxes without food or water, suffering from severe dehydration.

In total, nearly 400 of the seized animals later died or had to be euthanized due to the extent of their neglect. The surviving creatures were rehomed or sent to RSPCA centers for care and rehabilitation.

The individual responsible, Johnson, was sentenced in September 2023 to 24 weeks in jail, suspended for 18 months, and banned from keeping animals for 16 years. The RSPCA's Alison Greaves described the operation as "distressing" for the investigators involved, who were confronted with the suffering of these "beautiful animals."
