A 36-year-old man, Mohsin Ayaz Khan, died of cardiac arrest on Sunday afternoon after being brought to a private hospital in Nagpur. His family alleged that no doctor attended to him in the emergency ward for several hours.
Family members claimed hospital staff informed them that a doctor's availability on a Sunday required a substantial payment. Despite their willingness to pay, the cardiologist reportedly arrived much later, by which time Khan had passed away.
On Wednesday, Khan's relatives returned to the hospital, demanding explanations for the alleged delay and lack of timely ECG assessment. Their distress led to property damage and a confrontation with hospital employees, with videos circulating on social media.
Tensions rose as a crowd gathered, with local residents joining the family in protest. The cardiologist later certified the cause of death as cardiac arrest, precluding a post-mortem examination.
Mankapur police arrived to control the situation, taking the cardiologist and some relatives to the station. While no offense was registered immediately, police are considering action against the relatives for alleged vandalism under a specific Maharashtra Act.
