Hospital Security Leaves Patient Injured in Snow

Brydon Lafaver has accused security staff at Victoria Hospital in Prince Albert of violently escorting him outside and leaving him injured and disoriented in the snow following his treatment. Video footage from December appeared to show hospital security officers pushing Lafaver out of the building, with him later seen lying alone in a snowbank. The Saskatchewan Health Authority confirmed it banned the guards involved and has completed its review, stating their actions did not meet standards.
This incident is being presented as part of a broader issue by the First Nations Health Ombudsperson's Office (FNHOO). The FNHOO has reported over 20 serious complaints regarding SHA protective services and First Nations patients, indicating a pattern of mistreatment. Since its opening in July 2023, the FNHOO has received over 547 complaints from First Nations individuals navigating Saskatchewan's health system.
Napoleon Derange, another individual, also shared his experience of a violent encounter with hospital security that has left him relearning to walk. In response to these concerns and the recent death of Trevor Dubois following an altercation with security at Royal University Hospital, the Saskatchewan Health Ministry has ordered an independent review of hospital security policies. The province also announced plans to implement metal detectors in emergency departments.
