Summary
- Cockroaches and houseflies found in a premium private suite.
- Pests spotted on food and a breast pump for the newborn.
- Hospital fined for deficient service and mental agony.
A couple's hope for a sterile and comfortable birth in a premium private suite at Motherhood Hospital turned into a nightmare due to the presence of cockroaches and houseflies. The pests were observed on food items and a breast pump used for their newborn, leading the consumer commission to find the hospital liable for deficient service.
The incident occurred in August 2024 when the expectant mother was admitted. Her husband opted for a Rs 1.4 lakh premium suite, expecting high standards. However, the couple discovered pests on their first night. Despite being moved to another suite, they remained unsatisfied and pursued legal action.
In January 2025, after issuing a legal notice and not receiving adequate response, they filed a consumer complaint. The hospital contested the claims, stating they offered alternatives and immediate assistance. However, video evidence of pests in the suite was presented and not disputed.
The commission ruled that failing to maintain hygienic conditions in a maternity hospital constitutes a significant deficiency in service. While medical care was deemed adequate and no health complications arose, the hospital was ordered to pay Rs 50,000 for mental agony and Rs 10,000 for litigation costs.
