Portable Toilet Horror: Woman Trapped in Hate Attack
24 Sep
Summary
- Two men charged with hate-motivated assault after tipping portable washroom.
- Victim trapped inside, treated for exposure to waste and chemicals.
- Hate motive considered due to alleged gender and ethnicity comments.
Charges have been laid against two men for a hate-motivated assault that saw a woman trapped inside a portable washroom after it was tipped over. The incident occurred outside a Calgary restaurant in July. Bystanders intervened to free the woman, who subsequently received treatment for exposure to waste and chemicals.
The investigation, conducted by the hate crime prevention team, identified two 24-year-old men from Calgary and Kimberley, B.C. They are charged with assault causing bodily harm, with separate court dates scheduled for October 9 and November 3. Authorities allege the pair made comments targeting the victim's gender and ethnicity before the assault, leading to the hate-motivated classification.
Experts note that hate crimes are often underreported. Professor Bronwyn Bragg highlighted that only a fraction of such incidents reach the police, with many experiencing everyday hateful commentary. Iman Bukhari of the Canadian Cultural Mosaic Foundation added that fear of retaliation, language barriers, and mistrust of police contribute to underreporting. She emphasized the need for accessible, community-based reporting mechanisms.
Calgary Police Service reported a 26 percent increase in hate crime and hate incident reporting from January to June this year, potentially aided by a new online reporting tool launched in June. This indicates a growing awareness and willingness to report such incidents.
