Jails Go High-Tech: Haryana Boosts Prison Security
16 Apr
Summary
- Jails will have 24/7 surveillance via CCTV and motion sensors.
- Kavach system deployment to jam mobile signals and curb crime.
- High-risk criminals housed in enhanced security cells.

Haryana's prison system is set to become fully tech-driven, implementing comprehensive surveillance and enhanced security measures. A new standard operating procedure (SOP) is being finalized to ensure jails are crime-free and to disrupt gangster networks. This includes extensive CCTV coverage and motion sensors, with any unauthorized movement near prison walls triggering immediate alarms. Motion sensors will pilot in select facilities before wider rollout. The Kavach system is also being deployed to combat extortion calls and gang activity from within prison walls, starting with six high-sensitivity jails equipped with jammers and signal-blocking equipment. Prison security has been bolstered with increased staffing and rotational 24-hour patrols, particularly at key facilities like Bhondsi Jail. High-risk criminals will be housed in specialized high-security cells with advanced surveillance. Prisoner movements, meetings, and interactions will be more controlled and transparent. Additionally, court appearances are increasingly being conducted via video conferencing, with Bhondsi Jail utilizing 50 units for this purpose.
