A tragic house fire in Harlow in October 2012, which resulted in the deaths of Dr. Sabah Usmani and her five children, Hira, Sohaib, Muneeb, Rayyan, and Maheen, has now been classified as a cold case. Essex Police have stated there are no longer any viable investigative leads, though they will continue to assess any new information that emerges.
The children's father, Dr. Abdul Shakoor, the only survivor of the devastating blaze, expressed his profound disappointment. He fears he may not live to see justice for his family, as the police indicated the case would only be reviewed again in a decade unless new evidence surfaces.
Despite extensive investigations under Operation Shakespeare, including arrests, no charges were ever filed. An anonymous letter received by police in July 2025, following a BBC podcast on the case, was believed to be from someone with crucial information, but forensic analysis could not identify the writer. Dr. Shakoor made a direct appeal to the author of this letter, urging them to come forward again, as he believes this is the only way to resolve the case.
