Harlem Community Mourns Murdered Mother of Four, Demands Justice
14 Nov
Summary
- Vigil held for Carmen Yadira Lopez, murdered in her apartment building
- Ex-boyfriend Luis Marquez charged with stabbing her over 20 times
- Family and friends call for justice and raise awareness of domestic violence

On the night of November 14th, 2025, the Harlem community gathered to pay tribute to Carmen Yadira Lopez, a mother of four who was tragically murdered in her own apartment building just days earlier. Loved ones lit candles in her memory, determined to keep her light alive through her children.
Lopez's ex-boyfriend, Luis Marquez, is now in custody and charged with her murder. According to police, Marquez allegedly waited for over two hours for Lopez to return home on Monday morning, then stabbed her more than 20 times as she pleaded for him to stop.
The family is devastated, but they are also using this tragedy to shed light on the issue of domestic violence. Lopez's sister, Lucy, demanded "justice for my sister," while Stephanie McGraw of the domestic violence awareness organization W.A.R.M. emphasized that "silence hides violence" and urged others to continue speaking out.
The Harlem community is rallying behind Lopez's family, with W.A.R.M. helping to cover her funeral expenses. A GoFundMe has also been set up to support her four sons. As they grieve the loss of their beloved mother, the family hopes that her story will inspire others to recognize the warning signs of domestic abuse and seek help before it's too late.
