Cybercriminals Exploit Wedding Invites to Steal Thousands from Victims

As of 2025-10-07T06:20:40+00:00, cybercriminals in Gurugram have been targeting unsuspecting victims through fake wedding invitations on WhatsApp. In a recent case, Vinod Kumar, a resident of Vishnu Garden, received a wedding invite from an unknown number on September 4th. Curious to see the invite, he clicked on the link, unknowingly allowing his phone to be hacked.

By the time Kumar realized what had happened, cybercriminals had already made three unauthorized transactions and drained nearly Rs 97,000 from his bank account. Following the incident, Kumar filed a complaint with the Gurugram police, who have registered a case and launched an investigation.

In a separate incident, a Gurugram couple was duped by a woman who posed as a talent scout for a reputed TV advertising agency. The woman, identifying herself as Anjali, approached the couple outside a restaurant at Ambience Mall, claiming she was recruiting children for a television ad shoot. She convinced the couple to transfer Rs 32,000 for a portfolio album and later Rs 1 lakh for a purported ad shoot. When the couple realized the fraud, they filed a complaint with the Cyber Crime Unit East.

Authorities have warned that cybercriminals are constantly inventing new ways to scam people, and the public must remain vigilant. They have urged residents to avoid clicking on links from unknown sources and refrain from sharing personal information or transferring money to unverified contacts.
