Five Acres for Lawyers: Haryana HC Committee Makes Key Proposal
11 Jul
Summary
- Committee recommends five acres for lawyers' chambers near Justice Tower.
- Fire incident left hundreds of advocates without adequate workspace.
- Haryana govt is yet to make a final decision on the proposal.

A key recommendation has been made by the building committee of the Punjab and Haryana High Court to the Haryana government. The committee proposed the allocation of roughly five acres of land adjoining the upcoming Tower of Justice for the construction of lawyers' chambers. This decision stems from a July 7 meeting and has been formally forwarded to the state's justice department.
The recommendation followed an inspection by committee chair Justice Harsimran Singh Sethi, who identified the land parcel as the most practical option. Although this land was previously earmarked for a botanical garden, the committee noted that such a facility could be relocated, while no viable alternative sites exist near the court complex for essential advocate facilities.
The urgent need for this space arose after a fire on May 24 destroyed three lawyers' halls, leaving an estimated 700 to 1,000 advocates without sufficient workspace. The Gurgaon district bar association, representing over 11,000 practicing advocates, highlighted how infrastructure shortages negatively impact both legal professionals and those seeking justice.
Furthermore, the association has appealed for reserved space within or near the judicial complex for bar rooms and other facilities before the Tower of Justice officially opens. The Haryana government is currently reviewing the committee's recommendation and has yet to announce a final decision regarding the land allocation for lawyers' chambers.
