Grimsby Playgrounds Vandalized: £10K Damage from Arson
28 Feb
Summary
- Arson incidents caused £10,000 damage to two Grimsby playgrounds.
- Wheelie bins were set alight, damaging tarmac and play equipment.
- Council seeks public assistance to identify those responsible for the fires.

Two Grimsby playgrounds have suffered significant damage estimated at £10,000 due to "mindless arson" involving wheelie bins. Incidents occurred at Barretts Rec on Scartho Road and Quantock Park in Scartho. At Barretts Rec, fires damaged nearby tarmac and scorched a hedge. Quantock Park saw a basket swing completely destroyed by a bin fire.
Councillor Ron Shepherd described the destruction as "unacceptable," emphasizing that these parks are intended for community enjoyment. The fires at Barretts Rec are believed to have occurred on 20 February, while the incident at Quantock Park took place on 11 January. This vandalism comes after North East Lincolnshire Council invested over £25,000 in Quantock Park in 2021 for new equipment and refurbishments.
The council is actively seeking public assistance to identify those responsible for these destructive acts. They urge anyone with information to come forward, noting that a small minority are spoiling these community spaces for everyone.
